Christmas morning, and the couple on the red sofa have reached the stage of the holiday where the drinks come out before noon and nobody mentions it. She is in the black dress she wore to last night's party, which tells you something about how last night went, and he has his arm around her with the quiet satisfaction of a man who has pulled off the gift-giving portion of the season without incident. The ribbons and boxes scattered around them confirm a successful operation.

Behind them on the cushion sits a toy jeep, still in its box, which means a child in this house is about to have a very good decade. The small blond figure at the edge of the frame is edging closer with the patience of a child who understands, dimly, that the adults need another few minutes before the important part of the morning can resume.

The knotty-pine paneling on the walls, the red Melmac tumblers, the sense of a house that was brand new and proudly so — all of it places this squarely in the postwar American interior, where the living room was simultaneously casual and aspirational, and Christmas was the one day a year it was allowed to look like a mess.
