Two girls, perhaps sisters, sit on a green brocade sofa in their good clothes — the kind of clothes kept for occasions that required sitting still and looking pleasant. In the 1950s, having a camera meant staging a moment, and staging a moment meant dressing everyone up and pointing them at a wall, because a wall held still. The younger girl has folded her hands in her lap with the precision of someone recently instructed to do exactly that. On the wall behind them hangs a framed floral print of the kind sold at department stores as living-room décor, chosen because it filled the space and matched nothing in particular. Neither girl looks unhappy, exactly — they look like people who have been told this will only take a minute, and have decided to believe it.
