A woman and a girl of about seven sit together on a green brocade sofa, both dressed with the particular seriousness that the 1950s reserved for being photographed indoors. The girl is in a satin party dress with a lace collar, which in that decade was not special-occasion clothing so much as standard-issue childhood formality — the default state of a daughter whose picture was about to be taken. The woman has folded her hands in her lap with the patient composure of someone who has been told to hold still and intends to do it correctly. Behind them a ceramic figurine and a table lamp anchor the room in the decorating logic of the era, when a living room was assembled to signal that its occupants had arrived somewhere, even if no one was entirely sure where. The girl's expression is the one children wear when adults have explained that this matters, and they have decided to believe it.
