On the image

Two girls sit on a teal damask sofa in what appears to be a middle-class American living room, dressed in crisp, color-coordinated outfits that suggest the occasion was at least a half-step above ordinary: one in pale yellow, one in bright red, both with carefully set waves in their hair. The girl on the right holds a wrapped gift with a bow—red and navy striped paper, the kind that came from a department store. This was the era when children were dressed up for photographs the way they were dressed up for church or a birthday party, and a gift-giving moment was formal enough to document. The sofa itself, with its small-scale geometric pattern and wooden frame barely visible, represents the kind of furniture a family would save for and keep pristine, which explains why two children are sitting on it at all—a photographer was present, making it an event. By the 1970s, children would sit on sofas unconsciously; in the 1950s, being allowed to sit on the good furniture while a camera was running was something you remembered about being a child.
