A girl of about nine sits on a brocade sofa in a 1950s American living room, arms folded and expression flat, dressed in a smocked party dress with a Peter Pan collar — the outfit chosen by someone else for exactly this occasion. The ceramic lamp beside her, black with hand-painted flowers and a scalloped shade, was the kind of thing a household acquired to signal that the living room had arrived at a certain level of taste. Someone in the family decided that the correct response to owning a camera was to seat a child next to the good lamp and take a portrait, because that is what you did with both a child and a lamp you were proud of. The girl understood none of this and made no effort to hide it. The living room looks exactly as intended; the subject does not.
