Two girls stand in their pajamas beside an end table, posing for whoever is holding the camera on what was almost certainly Christmas morning or a birthday evening — the kind of occasion that made a parent reach for the flashgun. The lamp anchoring the scene is a chinoiserie piece, its ceramic base molded into yellow-glazed Asian figures, the sort of decorative object that moved through American living rooms in the 1950s on the confident assumption that it was sophisticated. A matching figurine stands beside it on the table, completing a set that the household had assembled with some care. The younger girl rests her hand on the table's edge with the particular stillness of a child who has been told not to touch anything, and is touching it anyway. The lamp's cellophane shade cover is still on, which in the 1950s was not eccentricity but standard practice — protecting the shade from dust being understood as a reasonable trade for living with crinkle and glare indefinitely.
