A girl of about ten sits on the edge of a bed in a pink bedroom, a watercolor palette balanced across her lap and a baby doll propped beside her, and she has paused mid-stroke to look at whoever just opened the door. In the 1950s, a girl's bedroom was understood to contain exactly these two things — art supplies and a baby doll — because the decade had a very clear theory about what girls were practicing for. The watercolor set is the well-used kind, its tin lid worn to the metal, which means this was actual work rather than a prop arranged for the occasion. She holds the brush with the focused grip of someone who was, until a moment ago, not performing at all. The doll sits beside her in the posture of a patient subject, dressed in blue to match its painter, which the decade would have read as charming and we read as data.
