Two girls have been placed on the family sofa and told to sit nicely, which they have done with the cooperative resentment of children who were not consulted about the plan. Both wear matching red tops and coordinated striped skirts, the kind of deliberate sibling dressing that 1950s parents practiced as a statement of household order. The older girl has folded her arms in a posture that technically satisfies the instruction to sit still while communicating everything she thinks about it. Her younger sister wears a necktie knotted at the collar — an accessory that was, for a brief 1950s moment, considered charmingly sporty on a girl — and has arranged her hands in her lap with the careful stillness of someone following rules she did not make. Someone stood across the room and pressed the shutter, satisfied that the family had been successfully documented, unaware that the girls were documenting something else entirely.
