Three women sit on a blue patterned sofa in what appears to be a living room, dressed in the careful clothing of a daytime social visit: one in a sheer blouse with a pale undershirt, another in a black jacket with a small decorative pin, the third in dark fabric holding a drinking glass. On the low table before them sits a cake or dessert arranged in serving pieces. The room is furnished and wallpapered in the modest style of post-war American domestic life—a framed floral print hangs on the wall, a light switch and electrical outlet are visible, the whole scene lit with the even brightness of indoor flash photography. Whatever the occasion, it was planned enough to warrant dress clothes and careful arrangement of refreshment, which meant someone considered this gathering worthy of a photograph, though the women's expressions suggest the photographer arrived after the moment had already begun to feel like an obligation.
