Dressed up and posed on a dark green sofa, this couple has arranged themselves with the cheerful formality that the 1950s demanded of anyone who owned a camera: his arm around her shoulders, her legs angled just so, both smiling at the exact moment a photograph was supposed to begin. The wallpaper behind them — a dense fern-and-lattice pattern in white and gray — represents the decade's conviction that a wall left plain was a wall left unfinished.
She has put on her best floral-print dress, gold strapped heels, a pearl necklace, and a bracelet, because in 1950s domestic life, having your picture taken at home was an occasion that called for the same effort as going out. He is in a dark suit and tie, which meant either that they had just come from somewhere or that he had simply not yet changed, both being equally plausible on a Saturday.
