Somewhere in the 1950s, a young man in a white dress shirt with his tie already loosened decided this was exactly the right moment to be photographed, and he was not wrong. His partner, in a charcoal satin dress with a pearl necklace and hoop earrings, has arranged herself against him with the practiced ease of someone who has done this particular pose at this particular kind of event before.
The occasion reads clearly: a Saturday-night social, a wedding reception, a holiday party — the kind of event where the men arrived in ties and spent the evening working out of them, and the women dressed as though glamour were a civic obligation. Satin and pearls on a weeknight meant something then, and both of them knew it.
They are holding on to each other in front of a dark background with the uncomplicated confidence of two people who have not yet been asked to fill out a single form together.
