Sometime in the 1950s, a couple dressed as if their anniversary were a formal state occasion stood in their living room surrounded by enough yellow chrysanthemums to supply a float, because in that decade flowers were not a garnish but a statement of seriousness, and anyone marking a milestone was expected to prove it with blooms. He wore a double-breasted suit that had been the correct suit to own since roughly 1941 and would remain so until someone told him otherwise, which apparently no one had. She wore a blue lace dress of the kind that required weeks of planning and communicated, without ambiguity, that this was not an ordinary Tuesday. The yellow mum pinned to each of them served the same function as a press badge — it announced their status at this particular gathering without requiring them to explain it to anyone who walked in. Fifty years of evidence suggests the chrysanthemum does not actually improve with scale, but the 1950s had not yet reached that conclusion.
