House number 405 is the only hard fact this porch will give up, and it turns out to be enough — the couple standing in front of it has dressed the place with the same deliberate care they brought to their own appearances, right down to the matching red-trimmed window boxes and the pair of ornate metal glider chairs lined up behind them like an audience. She is in her church clothes: navy dress, pearl necklace, brooch, white hat — the full mid-century American woman's armor for any occasion worth photographing. He is in his version of the same effort, a pressed sport shirt standing in for the suit jacket he technically didn't need on a warm afternoon.

The porch itself is a period document. Those stamped-metal glider chairs, painted white with burgundy trim and decorative cutout panels, were sold through hardware stores and Sears catalogs across postwar America on the premise that a well-furnished front porch announced you had arrived at a certain level of domestic competence. The window boxes are color-coordinated with the chairs, which means someone made a decision about that.

They are smiling at whoever is holding the camera, which is to say at a family member, which is to say this is the official record of a Sunday afternoon that felt, at the time, like it deserved one.
