Prom night in the 1950s operated on a specific theory: that a teenage boy in a white dinner jacket and a burgundy bow tie, standing next to a girl in a strapless lace ballgown with yellow satin ribbon at the hem, in someone's living room, in front of the fireplace, constituted a formal occasion. The whole ritual — the wrist corsage, the matching color scheme worked out in advance, the posed stop before leaving — was treated with the gravity of a diplomatic reception.
The fireplace behind them with its painted hunting-scene prints and the crocheted table cover just visible at the edge place this firmly in a mid-decade American suburban living room, the kind of house where the good furniture was saved for exactly this moment. The young man stands with the particular stiffness of someone who has been told he looks fine and does not believe it.
She, meanwhile, carries the whole frame. The dress is the event — layers of lace over tulle, yellow ribbon bands announcing themselves, red lipstick precisely applied — while he is essentially her escort in the logistical sense. In 1955 or thereabouts, every parent in America took this exact picture in this exact spot, confident they were preserving something important, which it turns out they were.
