A young couple in the 1950s got married at home, which was still a thoroughly respectable option for a generation that saw no gap between domestic space and solemn occasion — the floral drapes, the pearl necklace, the small bride figurine on the table, and the tapered candles all confirm that someone had been planning this afternoon for a very long time. The bride wears cat-eye glasses under her tiara and veil, which in 1950s wedding photography was an act of quiet defiance, since the prevailing advice was to remove them for the ceremony and spend the happiest day of your life unable to see your husband's face.
