Cattle graze across a rough Tuscan pasture while a hilltop settlement watches from the distance, the kind of scene that Italian agriculture spent decades trying to mechanize away. The animals move with the unhurried confidence of creatures that had no idea their way of life was about to be replaced by tractors and cooperatives. Behind them the town sits elevated and organized, the sort of place where the postwar agrarian economy was being actively dismantled in favor of something called progress. In the foreground, a few grazing beasts occupy the middle distance with the indifference of livestock who have learned that humans make large plans and cattle eat grass either way.
The historian's note
The Tuscan countryside underwent rapid agricultural transformation in the 1950s and early 1960s as Italy's postwar economic boom shifted labor away from subsistence farming toward industrial work. Pastoral cattle herding, which had dominated the rural landscape for centuries, gave way to mechanized agriculture and eventually to tourism and viticulture as the dominant land uses. The hilltop settlement visible here is typical of the fortified medieval towns—terraced villages built for defense and water access—that remained the administrative and social centers of their rural regions even as the surrounding countryside depopulated. By the late 20th century, such scenes had vanished almost entirely from working farmland.
