Someone took a camera to a high point in the Blue Mountains and aimed it at the patchwork floor below, the kind of landscape vista that in the 1950s Americans were beginning to photograph to prove they had seen the country. The valley spreads out in orderly sections—pasture, forest, cleared ground—the way the land looked when it had been divided into holdings and someone's effort showed on every acre. In the foreground a dead tree stands stripped and dark against the focus of the shot, the accidental detail that makes the composition work: not the mountains beyond but the skeleton at the viewpoint, the burned evidence that fire had moved through here and that the photographer, standing at this exact ridge, was looking at a landscape only recently scarred. The deep blue of the sky and the scattered clouds read as a perfect day to travel, which is what Americans in the 1950s were doing constantly—finding high ground, taking pictures to remember it by, and moving on.
The historian's note
The Wallowa Valley, in northeastern Oregon's Union County, lies between the Wallowa Mountains to the south and the Blue Mountains to the north. The valley developed as ranching and agricultural land in the late nineteenth century and remained the primary economic base through the twentieth century. Fire was endemic to the region; the dead tree and burn evidence in the foreground is consistent with the management and natural fire cycles that shaped the landscape in this period. The 1950s marked the rise of automobile tourism in rural Oregon, as improved roads and leisure time brought photographers and sightseers to high vantage points throughout the state. This view, taken from an elevation typical of the Blue Mountain ridges, documents both the landscape itself and the cultural practice of landscape documentation that defined American tourism in the postwar decade.
