The historian's note
High-elevation meadows of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem were extensively documented in the 1950s by federal and regional photographers seeking to establish baseline conditions and demonstrate the scale of public lands under Forest Service and National Park administration. The burned snag visible in the foreground is consistent with fire regimes that had shaped subalpine and montane forests for millennia; the open meadow with mixed conifer regeneration indicates a landscape actively managed or recently disturbed. The vantage and color saturation suggest Kodachrome transparency film, the standard medium for regional surveys and archive documentation during the period. Such images served as both proof of condition and visual evidence for land-use planning and public interpretation in an era when wilderness and managed landscape were not yet rigidly opposed concepts.
