野花と低木がまばらに点在する高地の草原に、炭化した木の切り株が一本だけ立っている。景観は斜面を下るにつれ、樹木の茂る尾根と遠くの山々へと澄んだ空の下で開けていく。誰かがこの特定の視点までカメラを運び、土地の広がりと火災の跡を記録した——黒い切り株は広大な眺めの中の小さな句読点であり、盆地全体が見渡せて初めて意識されるたぐいの細部である。この場面は、波打つ森と開けた空を背景にした一本の焼け木が立ち止まるに値すると信じた誰かの仕事であり、景観における再生と喪失の幾何学が、ひとつのありふれた物体に読み取れると考えた者の仕事である。北部ロッキー山脈で活動していた1950年代の野外写真家は、火災を惨事としてではなく地形の一部として、木材と同じくらい読み取り可能でありふれたものとして見ており、この画像はその前提を論評なしに携えている。

The historian's note

グレーター・イエローストーン生態系の高地草原は、1950年代に連邦および地域の写真家によって広範に記録された。彼らは基準となる状態を確立し、Forest Serviceおよび国立公園局の管理下にある公有地の規模を示そうとしていた。前景に見える焼けた切り株は、何千年にもわたって亜高山帯および山地林を形成してきた火災体制と一致する。針葉樹の混合再生を伴う開けた草原は、積極的に管理されているか、あるいは最近攪乱を受けた景観であることを示している。視点と色の彩度からは、この時代の地域調査およびアーカイブ記録の標準媒体であったコダクロームのリバーサルフィルムが使用されたことがうかがえる。この種の画像は、荒野と管理された景観がまだ厳密に対立する概念ではなかった時代において、土地利用計画と公共の解説のための状態の証明であると同時に視覚的証拠としても機能した。
