誰かがこれを撮るために車を止めた。1950年代においてそれはほとんど市民の義務のようなものだった。州間高速道路網はまだ噂の域を出ず、国立公園の来園者数は毎夏増加し、コダックのカメラとガソリン満タンの家族は、十分に山らしく見える山があれば記録に残す義務を感じていた。

木の生育限界まで広がるセージブラッシュは、当時の基準では写真に値するものとは見なされていなかった。それは単に、観光客が本当に見たいものにたどり着くまでに車で通り抜けねばならない一万エーカーにすぎなかった。車内の誰も、これがどの峰なのか書き留めようとは思わなかった。その名称は自明であり、永遠にそうあり続けるという確信のもとに。だが、そうはならなかった。

結果として残されたのは、名前の付いていない実在の地理を写したスライドである。これは見落としか、あるいは大半の人々が景色をどう体験するかを正確に要約したものかのどちらかである――熱心に、そしてメモも取らずに。

The historian's note

この光景は、Rocky Mountainsの分水嶺の東側にある山間盆地に特徴的なセージブラッシュ・ステップ生態系を記録したものであり、おそらくWyomingか隣接する州のものと思われる。そこでは大型のセージブラッシュ（Artemisia tridentata）が針葉樹林限界より下の高地砂漠の平原を占めている。こうした地形は当時も現在も、この地域の国立公園や国有林への一般的な進入路である。

1950年代は、Rocky Mountain Westへのアメリカ人の自動車観光が大きく増加した時代であった。戦後の繁栄、自家用車保有の拡大、そしてカラースライド写真が家族旅行を記録する手段として普及したことがその背景にある。この地域の国立公園は、この十年間でおよそ来園者数を倍増させた。戦前にはあまり一般的ではなかった長距離のドライブ旅行を、多くの家族が行うようになったためである。

画面には建造物も道路も人物も写っていない。これは当時のアマチュア旅行者たちが数多く残した、注釈のない風景スナップ写真の典型であり、特定の名の付いた名所を記録するためというより、個人的な旅程の目印として撮影されたものである。
