In 1953, someone with a color camera stood in the high country of northeastern Oregon and shot back across the Wallowa Valley toward the distant ridges, the kind of landscape that in the post-war years had begun to announce itself as a destination for the newly mobile American family. The evergreen forest in the foreground is dense and untouched, the rolling grassland beyond has been cleared for grazing, and the whole valley reads as a place where timber and cattle held equal claim. This is the precise moment when such valleys still belonged to the working landscape rather than to tourism or nostalgia — the trees were still worth the cost of their own removal, the grass still fed someone's herd, and the mountains in the distance were simply what happened next. The photographer clearly had film and gas enough to spend the afternoon here, a luxury that marked him as neither a working rancher nor a passing tourist, but something new: a person with time and equipment, documenting his country for reasons that were becoming available to people of modest means.
