On the image

A high-altitude vantage point looks down across a patchwork valley where someone has built a resort or gathering facility beside a small lake, the kind of postwar development that assumed Europeans had both the leisure and the money to drive into the mountains for a weekend away. The landscape itself—dense conifer forest broken by pasture and the geometric gash of a cleared shoreline—suggests this is the Bavarian or Austrian pre-Alps, where the forest meets the valley in the orderly way that suggests centuries of careful husbandry. The aerial perspective and the saturated color of the film stock mark this as the optimistic 1950s or early 1960s, when someone owned an aircraft and thought the view worth documenting: proof that progress and nature could coexist, or at least be photographed together. The hazy distance and the patchwork of clearings recede toward the horizon with the confidence of a landscape that believed itself permanently settled and improved.
