A modernist institutional building sits awkwardly on a cleared hillside overlooking a scattered valley town ringed by forested mountains, the kind of structure that announces itself as Important to the community below but has no clear reason to exist up here except that someone decided it belonged in this specific spot. The 1950s loved putting new buildings on hills—it made them look like they mattered, like they could see everything, like they were watching the town make good decisions. Below, the town spreads across the lower slopes in the loose, horizontal way of a place that grew when people could still afford space, with roads cutting through forest that hasn't yet learned it should make room for suburbs. The mountains beyond have the blue-grey wash of actual distance, the kind that made postcard photographers and civic planners both believe they were documenting the future. Someone is living in that modern box on the ridge, probably in an administrator's role, probably confident that proximity to nature and elevation above the ordinary town below were solving some problem they'd been hired to fix.
