A person with a camera stood on high ground and pointed it at a river valley to prove that nature, when photographed from the right angle, looks like it has been organised by someone with a sense of composition. The Danube or a similar Central European river meanders through forested land in a series of loops that appear almost designed, each bend framing dark forest and pale water in a rhythm that suggests the landscape itself was waiting for Kodachrome to be invented. The haze hanging over the distant hills is either morning mist or the industrial exhaust of a neighbouring nation, both equally permanent features of the post-war European view. Someone spent the afternoon acquiring this altitude to capture a scene that proves a river system, when seen from above and at distance, stops being a utility and becomes evidence that geography has a sense of beauty it never knew it possessed.
