An elevated view across the Rhine Valley shows a landscape mid-transformation, where agricultural fields in the foreground give way to industrial infrastructure and river commerce in the distance. Two massive crane structures frame the far bank—the kind of equipment that arrived when West German industry decided the postwar era meant building up fast and bigger, consequences to the pastoral order be damned. A highway curves through the middle distance, concrete evidence that someone in a planning office had calculated this valley's future and found it did not include remaining quiet. The haze that softens the far reaches is not romantic distance but the chemical exhalation of a region that had chosen productivity over air, a choice that would define the Ruhr and Rhine industrial zones for decades. This is what the economic miracle looked like from a hilltop: prosperity made visible as the confident erasure of what came before.
