A small plane pilot or passenger took this shot through a scratched and dusty window at five thousand feet, capturing what appears to be a major estuary or harbour system in hazy daylight—probably the 1950s or early 1960s, judging by the colour saturation and the window's fingerprint ecology. The view is meant to document geography, perhaps for military, civil engineering, or insurance purposes, but the atmosphere has other plans: industrial haze or weather has turned the scene into a blue-grey smear where water and land have nearly stopped being distinct. Two or three ships sit in the broad anchorage below, tiny enough that whoever was flying bothered to look down and frame this, which means they thought it mattered—probably it did, to someone at a desk back on shore who needed to know how many vessels were sitting idle or how much sediment had built up in the channel. The scratches on the window are doing half the artistic work now, seventy years later; at the time they were just the cost of flying through weather and dust. The photographer assumed this record would fade into a filing cabinet. It became a time capsule instead.
