Someone talked their way onto a small plane — or perhaps chartered one with genuine purpose, a survey flight or a forestry inspection — and pointed a camera out the window at several hundred thousand acres of boreal spruce forest rolling away toward a distant mountain range. This was the era when aerial photography still felt like a privilege, before satellite imagery made every square kilometre of wilderness freely available to anyone with a browser, and the person holding the camera understood they were seeing something most people never would. The colour cast has gone cool and blue with age, the way consumer slide film from the 1970s tends to shift when the dyes decide to disagree, which gives the unbroken forest canopy the slightly unearthly quality of a landscape on another planet. Scattered clearings and what may be a ranch or small settlement sit in a middle-distance valley, the only evidence that humans had any opinion about the land at all. The scale of the thing was clearly the point — that immensity of undivided conifer forest that Canada has always had the luxury of treating as background.
