A rural valley in the Willamette region spreads behind a simple wire fence, the kind of vista that defined agricultural Oregon in the postwar decades when flat land still meant prosperity and open space meant there was room for more of it. Snow-covered fields and white farm structures dot the middle distance while forested ridges rise in the back, the landscape orderly and productive in the way that seemed permanent. Someone stood here with a color-film camera—expensive film, not casual—to record what a working farm valley looked like at a moment when nobody imagined it would be anything else. The fence in sharp focus and the distant blue-white mass of what may be a barn or industrial structure suggest someone was documenting property or surveying development, the eye of practical interest rather than art. By the 1970s, much of this would become suburbs; the photographer appears to have caught it just before the valley's utility to humans changed from agricultural to residential.
