A riverside industrial complex sits in the gathering dusk of what appears to be the 1950s or early 1960s, the kind of American moment when a city's prosperity was measured in smokestacks and the willingness of factories to locate there. A low modern office building anchors the foreground, its horizontal lines announcing that progress was rational and efficiently organized. Beyond it, the river reflects the last blue light of day while the far bank shows the silhouette of a ridge or distant hills, and smoke rises from what were probably steel or paper mills upstream. The photographer has caught the scene at that exact moment of transition when artificial light and natural light are negotiating for dominance, the sort of professional industrial documentation that corporations commissioned to prove their installation was respectable and of permanent importance. No person appears. The structures are arranged with the confidence of an era that believed factories were not temporary expedients but fundamental facts of American geography.
