Somewhere in the rural American West in the 1950s, a town's entire commercial life is visible in a single block: a stone-faced garage on the left, a cluster of early-fifties pickups and sedans parked at angles the way small towns parked before anyone had invented the concept of a parking problem, and on the right the Winneltha Mercantile Co., General Merchandise, which was the kind of establishment that sold you a saddle blanket and a tin of coffee in the same transaction and considered this a perfectly rational business model. A large trophy antler display sits in the foreground near the utility pole, the universal western-town signal that the surrounding country was serious about hunting and that the proprietor wanted you to know it before you even crossed the street. The whole block has the unhurried permanence of a place that had been doing exactly this since territorial days and saw no reason to stop. What the scene could not yet know was that within a decade the highway bypass and the regional chain store would explain, slowly and without mercy, why the Mercantile model had a limited future.
