Four men stand in the road at a small-town intersection the way men stood in roads before anyone thought that was a problem. Two are on the left, two in the middle, all in light summer shirts, and their posture — hands at sides, weight back slightly — is the universal stance of men who have gathered to look at something being done to the ground. The unpaved surface and a fresh mound of disturbed earth near the corner suggest the town is installing something: a culvert, a water line, or possibly just thinking about it seriously for another decade.

The houses across the road are dark-painted two-story frames with steep gabled roofs, the kind of modest but sturdy residential architecture that defines a certain kind of anglophone Canadian small town — Ontario or Quebec's Eastern Townships would both fit. A hand-lettered stop sign on a low post marks the corner with the gravity of municipal infrastructure that the town has not yet fully committed to.

In the foreground, zinnias bloom along a picket fence with the cheerful indifference of flowers to civic disruption. Someone planted that garden and kept it going, which means someone here had a plan for this place that extended past whatever the men in the road were puzzling over.
