Somewhere in mid-century America, a bronze general sits astride his horse in a traffic island of manicured hedges and low ornamental plantings, the kind of civic monument that every self-respecting American city erected between the Civil War and World War I on the theory that a man on horseback in a park would inspire future generations to do something similarly equestrian. The 1950s automobiles parked in a loose row behind the shrubbery — rounded, cream-colored, built when Detroit still believed in curves — date the scene as precisely as a calendar. Whoever took this stopped to commemorate not a moment but a destination, the way families in the 1950s treated roadside attractions and public statuary as proof that the drive had been worth it. The statue itself is elevated just enough to suggest that whoever is up there mattered, though the exact identity has been absorbed by a century of civic indifference. The cars will eventually rust, the hedges will be ripped out in some future beautification project, and the general will keep riding nowhere with the same calm confidence he had on the day they unveiled him.
