Someone stood on a hillside in the 1960s and pointed a camera at a valley that had been farmed for generations, the kind of landscape where every family within ten miles was related to every other family and everyone knew it. The small blue outbuilding in the foreground has given up on its structural ambitions and is leaning into the shrubs at an angle that suggests it has been meaning to fall over for about fifteen years and finally found a good moment. Across the valley, white farmhouses sit at the measured distances of working agricultural land, each one the product of a family that believed in doing things properly, including building structures that would outlast them — the outbuilding in the foreground representing the exception that proves the rule. The rolling hills behind carry that particular shade of summer green that belongs to the Maritime provinces or the Appalachian fringe of Quebec, where the growing season is short enough that June looks this saturated and urgent. Someone took this picture because the view was worth saving, which it was, and the listing shed got into the frame because nobody was paying attention to the shed.
