By the 1950s America had developed a firm belief that the correct response to a crumbling piece of frontier history was to stabilize it, mow the grass around it, and invite families to drive past it on a Sunday afternoon. This substantial two-story log structure — its dovetail-notched corners still tight, a long open shed wing extending to the right on posts — has the proportions and layout of an early American tavern or stagecoach inn, the kind of building that once stood at a crossroads and did a brisk trade in bad whiskey and slightly better conversation. Someone in a state parks department or historical commission had clearly decided it deserved a gravel path and a picket fence rather than another decade of collapse, which put it firmly in the era of the great mid-century pioneer-heritage revival, when Americans were simultaneously building suburbs and enshrining log cabins as proof of where they had come from. A lone visitor is just visible in the doorway, doing what every visitor to a preserved frontier building does: standing still for a moment, deciding whether the experience is educational or just hot.
