On the image

Sometime in the 1950s, Americans developed a considerable appetite for visiting the past in person, and the past obliged by being reassembled into tidy open-air museum sites across the Midwest and Upper South. This small notched-log cabin — the kind that housed entire families through winters that did not forgive poor planning — has been stabilised, given a swept dirt apron, and fitted with a wooden well-sweep beside the door, the whole arrangement making the hardship of frontier life legible as a pleasant afternoon outing. The well-sweep is the detail that gives the game away: it has been positioned for maximum picturesqueness, angled just so, which is not where you'd put it if you actually needed water. Someone in a parks department or historical society made decisions about what pioneer authenticity should look like, and the result is an authenticity that would have puzzled the pioneers considerably. A modern white structure peeks from behind the shrubs to the right, as if history and the present reached an uneasy property-line agreement. The cabin endures, preserved against the very conditions that built it.
