On the image
Someone cut a clean vertical face into this hillside and then did what field scientists of the 1960s did best: they turned raw dirt into data. Two small paper tags, each carrying a string of digits that meant everything to the person who wrote them and nothing to anyone else, now hang against the exposed strata like tiny bureaucratic flags planted on a very slow-moving frontier.
The numbers on the tags promise precision, a depth, a grid reference, a sample lot, the sort of exactness that makes a report look finished even when the ground itself remains stubbornly ambiguous. Grass and loose stone still crowd the top of the cut, unconcerned that below them a stratigraphic record is being converted into a filing system.
Nobody in this picture is posing, which is the giveaway that the real subject was never a person at all. It was the trench, and the tags, and the quiet faith that if you label a layer of soil correctly, you have basically explained it.
The historian's note
The image documents a soil or archaeological excavation trench, a common method used from the mid-twentieth century onward to expose and record subsurface stratigraphy for geological or archaeological survey purposes. The small placards affixed to the trench wall are sample identification tags, used to correlate the visible soil horizons with laboratory analysis or catalog records kept separately from the field site.
Such trenches were dug either for scientific sampling, road or construction assessment, or archaeological testing, with the numbered tags serving as a low-technology but reliable cross-reference system before digital field recording became standard. The exposed section shows distinct soil horizons and embedded stone, typical of the kind of profile recorded to establish sequence, depth, and composition at a given site.
No specific location, institution, or project is identified in the available evidence, so the trench cannot be attributed to a named excavation or survey with certainty.
