On the image

Someone in the early twentieth century decided that the best way to understand a sulphur deposit or similar mineral formation was to photograph it at close range with natural light, as though rendering it faithfully would somehow transfer its properties to paper. The specimen presents itself in cross-section: dark crystalline or metallic core surrounded by lighter mineral crusts and oxidised surfaces, the kind of thing a geologist or mining engineer would have wanted catalogued for a report that no one reads anymore. The white dusting and colour gradations suggest weathering, age, or the chemical processes that created the formation in the first place—all of which the photographer assumed were self-evident to anyone who looked. What the photograph actually documents is the earnest belief that nature's secrets could be unlocked by pointing a camera at them and holding still.
