On the image

A high alpine valley filled with the grey-blue meltwater of a glacier, the kind of landscape that in the mid-twentieth century represented opportunity rather than scenery. On the far bank a small cluster of vehicles and equipment sits scattered across the barren moraine, the temporary settlement of a mining or resource-extraction operation in a place where permanent habitation was neither expected nor necessary. The snow-capped peaks above hold the entire valley's water budget, and the turquoise opacity of the melt tells the story of suspended sediment—rock ground to flour by the glacier's weight, now flowing downslope toward whatever commercial purpose brought people here in the first place. Someone drove trucks and equipment into this valley on the assumption that what lay beneath the stone was worth the logistics, the isolation, and the work; the photograph captures the moment when that assumption was still operative, when emptiness had become temporary workspace.
