A cinematographer working for the National Park Service or a similar federal outfit in 1948 pointed a camera down at the rim vegetation of the Grand Canyon and saw what looked like a promising shot of autumn aspens in their yellow dress, the kind of scenic footage that would fit neatly into a promotional film about American natural wonders. The aspens are there, bright and distinctive, but what the camera caught instead is a forest in the middle of its indifferent business—conifer species darker and less photogenic crowding in alongside, the whole stand looking less like a postcard moment and more like the actual chaotic mess of a high-desert treeline. The film stock, whatever it was, has shifted toward a greenish cast over the decades, and the focus is soft in a way that suggests either the camera was in motion or the operator was working from a distance. This is the kind of footage that probably ended up on a reel titled something like "Scenic Splendor" and was shown once in a visitor center, the kind of document made with the absolute confidence that it would help Americans understand why they should visit, and it did its job perfectly, which is to say nobody remembers it.
