Someone shot this sideways, which is either an accident or an artistic choice, and the canyon does not particularly care either way. The road cuts a pale gray stripe along the base of a striated limestone butte in the Arizona high desert, the kind of two-lane that exists primarily to remind drivers how small they are, a lesson the Colorado Plateau has been delivering for five million years to anyone who pulls over long enough to look up.
By 2002 the American road trip had fully absorbed the digital interruption — disposable cameras were still common, phone cameras were marginal, and people were taking a lot of slightly off-kilter shots they would not discover were off-kilter until the drugstore handed back the prints two weeks later. The resulting frame, rotated ninety degrees from what the shooter intended, accidentally turns the road into a wall and the butte into a kind of geological skyscraper, which is not a bad description of how these formations actually feel when you are standing at their base.
The distant mesa ridge holds a faint blue haze that Arizona light produces at midday, the color that makes every western landscape look like a postcard even when you are just passing through on the way somewhere else.
