Somewhere in the layered canyon country of Arizona, a lone figure walks a gravel wash toward walls that took two hundred million years to build and will be indifferent to the review left afterward. The stratigraphy exposed in that distant mesa face is the kind of thing a geology professor could spend a semester on, and which most visitors absorb as 'very old and very big' before moving on to lunch.
By 2002 this kind of trip had a settled ritual: drive to the trailhead, pack too much water or too little, walk until the scale of the place reorganized your sense of self, then return to a parking lot and decide the experience was spiritual. The scrub brush pushing yellow-green through the rock debris along the wash confirms it's the cooler half of the year, the only sensible time a person without a death wish attempts canyon country on foot.
The bright blue gear at the right edge belongs to whoever is holding the camera, a reminder that every wilderness photograph is also a self-portrait of someone who stepped just far enough back to stay out of it.
