Someone stood here with a hatchet and enough confidence to believe this particular scar would still mean something years later. The pale wound cut into the bark is a trail blaze, the standard method by which foresters, surveyors, and hikers of the era marked a route through country that had no signs, no paint, and no patience for getting lost.
The logic was simple and, for its time, entirely reasonable: strip the bark, expose the lighter wood beneath, and let the contrast do the talking until the tree healed over or someone cut a fresh one. Nobody blazing a tree in the 1950s worried much about permanence, because permanence wasn't really the point. The point was getting the next person through before winter, and this particular gash did its job long enough for someone with a camera to get close enough to prove it existed.
What the photograph actually preserves, though, is the moment right before the forest starts erasing the message. Sap has already begun darkening the edges, bark is creeping back in from both sides, and in another decade this would have been just a tree again, its brief career as a signpost forgotten by everyone except whoever kept the film.
