Someone in 1953 crouched down in the chaparral and pointed a camera at the underside of a boulder, which is the kind of decision that makes perfect sense to the person making it and requires explanation to everyone else. The fractured pink granite resting on darker base rock has the look of arid high-country terrain — the scrub oak and dry-berried branches framing it place this somewhere in the western American interior, where hikers and prospectors alike had been photographing rocks with great conviction since the nineteenth century on the theory that geology was self-evidently interesting. The gnarly trunk wedged beneath the overhang gives the whole composition a slightly accidental quality, as though the real subject kept moving and the photographer settled for what stayed still. In an era when color film was expensive enough to make every frame feel deliberate, someone decided this particular boulder, in this particular shadow, was worth the cost.
