A paleontologist's chisel rests against a slab of pale limestone bearing a series of clear, regularly-spaced impressions—the fossilized track of some creature that walked across mud millions of years ago and left behind the only proof it ever existed. The rectangular indentations are so uniform they look almost manufactured, which is why someone a century or more ago believed they were worth extracting from the quarry wall with hand tools and careful work. The surrounding rock face shows the casual violence of extraction: rough gouges, loose fragments, and the deep shadows of freshly opened stone. What strikes a modern viewer is how manual the whole enterprise was—no pneumatic drills, no database, just a person with a flat bar and the confidence that these marks mattered enough to destroy the surrounding matrix to save them. The blue-painted tool and the black soil suggest field work, the kind of patient documentation that built the early fossil record when natural history was still partly detective work and partly faith that the earth had a story worth reading if you looked hard enough.
