Somewhere in continental Europe — the rough-rendered stone wall, the shuttered window glimpsed over the shoulder, the whole texture of the place — a man in a tweed sport coat and a paisley tie has paused to be photographed with a woman in a blue dress and a red-collared jacket. He is smiling with the focused sincerity of a man who has been told this will take two seconds. She has placed her hand on his shoulder in the way people do when they want a photograph to look natural and have achieved the opposite.
The tie alone locates the decade with some precision. Wide, medallion-patterned, worn with a pale blue shirt and a soft-shouldered jacket — this was a man dressed for a day that mattered without quite knowing how formal to be, which was the defining sartorial condition of the 1950s. Sunglasses pushed up into her hair suggest the day was bright and that she was the kind of woman who kept track of her own accessories.
The whole scene has the quality of a holiday photograph taken by whoever happened to be standing nearest, the couple squinting pleasantly into the sun against a wall that has absorbed several centuries of weather and is indifferent to the occasion. They look like people who believed the trip was going well, and there is no evidence to contradict them.
