Somewhere in Central or Eastern Europe in the 1950s, a family arranged itself against a weathered wooden outbuilding for the kind of photograph that required a man to put on his good suit jacket regardless of the season. The father's grey wool blazer over a blue open-collar shirt was the era's studied compromise between dressed-up and relaxed, the visual equivalent of trying hard while appearing not to. The mother's green checked dress and the girls' neatly buttoned blouses confirm that everyone understood the occasion, which was simply the camera being present — sufficient reason, in that decade, to look like your best self on a Tuesday. The two daughters lean into the group with the slightly self-conscious smiles of children who have been coached on the matter, while the father squints into the sun with the expression of a man who suspects the photographer is going to take three more shots just to be sure. The whole exercise was less about capturing a moment than about producing evidence that the family existed and was doing fine, which in postwar Europe was not a trivial thing to document.
