Somewhere in Central Europe in the 1950s, a man and woman have put on their formal clothes to stand in a courtyard and be photographed together, which was the era's standard method of proving that a family existed and was doing fine. He wears the broad-brimmed fedora that was still, in that decade, the non-negotiable signal that a man of a certain age was taking the occasion seriously, and his dark suit and knotted tie confirm he understood the assignment. She has done the same in her way, with a brooch at the collar and hair set with care, because this was a generation that did not come outside in front of a camera looking like they had not thought about it. Behind them stands the plain rendered-concrete facade of a postwar apartment block, the kind built across Eastern and Central Europe by governments that had decided that efficient shelter was more important than ornament, a decision that produced buildings that were neither. The whole scene is a portrait of two people who had survived enough history to know that a photograph taken in good clothes was a reasonable thing to do.
