Sometime in the 1950s, a group of American adults compressed themselves into a living room and decided this was the moment for a photograph. The women are in cocktail dresses and pearl necklaces, the men in sport coats and bow ties, and everyone is leaning on everyone else with the easy physical confidence of people who have been friends long enough that personal space is a weeknight concept.

At the center of it, two men are mid-conversation and apparently unaware that a camera exists, which is the real subject of the picture — the gap between the people who remembered to perform and the people who forgot. The man in the dark suit is so absorbed in whatever he is saying that the whole party has arranged itself around him like a solar system around a sun, which he would probably have considered entirely appropriate.

The orange drapes and the color palette date the room as precisely as a carbon test. Somebody spent an evening framing this gathering as evidence of a good life, and by every measure available to the 1950s, they were right.
