An older couple stands on a terrace balcony somewhere along the Dalmatian coast, dressed in the dark wool jackets that Central and Eastern Europeans wore regardless of the season, on the theory that looking respectable required a certain amount of discomfort. Behind them a deep blue Adriatic bay curves between limestone karst hills, with terracotta-roofed buildings clustered at the waterline in the way Dalmatian towns have arranged themselves since the Venetians decided the whole coastline should look like a postcard. This was the 1950s, when Yugoslavia under Tito had begun cautiously reopening to tourism, and a trip to the coast carried the specific weight of a reward — something earned, not merely taken. The man's hand on his hip and the woman's steady gaze at the camera suggest people who understood that standing in front of a beautiful view was a thing you documented, not necessarily a thing you relaxed into.
