Somewhere along the Adriatic or Aegean coast, a man in a dark suit and tie has positioned himself against a crumbling limestone wall to be photographed, which in the 1950s meant wearing your best clothes regardless of the circumstances. The wall belongs to a town that had clearly been there for several centuries before anyone thought to maintain it, and the two-story plaster-and-stone buildings behind him carry the particular look of places that survived the war by being too modest to bother bombing.

The camera angle is low, shooting up from below the wall, so the man appears slightly monumental against the peeling facades and blue shutters — more monumental than he probably intended, or possibly exactly as monumental as he intended. He is dressed with the careful formality of a man who treats a tourist photograph as a semi-official occasion.

What the scene actually captures is the postwar European habit of maintaining dignity in settings that had stopped cooperating with dignity some decades earlier. The suit says everything is in order. The wall disagrees.
